What is the main difference between the Midland ER310 and Eton FRX3+?

The ER310 carries a larger alkaline battery backup (6 AA vs 3 AAA), a rated 130-lumen CREE LED flashlight, an ultrasonic dog whistle for potential search-and-rescue use, and generally produces more usable radio runtime per minute based on manufacturer data and independent testing. The FRX3+ is lighter at 0.93 lb, includes an AUX-in jack for external audio sources, has a red LED flashing beacon and glow-in-the-dark locator, and reviewers have described its speaker quality as superior for AM/FM listening. Neither radio includes S.A.M.E. county programming. Both feature automatic NOAA weather alerting.

Does the Midland ER310 have a headphone jack?

Yes. The Midland ER310 includes a 1/8-inch headphone jack, confirmed in both the official Midland manual and independent reviews. The Eton FRX3+ also includes a 3.5mm headphone jack. The FRX3+ additionally includes an AUX-in jack for connecting external audio sources: a feature the ER310 does not have.

Which radio has better hand-crank output: the ER310 or FRX3+?

Independent testing suggests the ER310 generally produces more usable radio runtime per minute of cranking. Midland's manual states one minute of cranking provides up to 9 minutes of radio use. Eton's specifications state four minutes of cranking produces 10 to 15 minutes of radio time, and one minute of cranking provides approximately one minute of talk time on a smartphone. Results vary with crank speed and conditions, so treat these as directional figures rather than guarantees.

Is the Eton FRX3+ waterproof?

No. Eton's own specifications confirm the FRX3+ does not carry an official IP water-resistance rating and should be kept dry. It is rated impact resistant up to 3.28 feet. Both radios are built for rugged use but should be protected from rain and water immersion.

Do either the ER310 or FRX3+ have S.A.M.E. county programming?

Neither radio includes S.A.M.E. (Specific Area Message Encoding) county-level programming. Both receive all seven NOAA weather channels and automatically alert when any warning is broadcast within reception range, but neither can be programmed to filter alerts by specific county. For county-specific home alerting, a dedicated desktop weather radio with S.A.M.E. such as the Midland WR400, is a better choice alongside a portable radio.

Which radio sounds better: the ER310 or FRX3+?

Reviewers who have tested both radios in the same pool, including HiConsumption, rated the FRX3+ as having the best speaker quality among the emergency radios in their comparison, while the ER310's audio was described as average for an emergency radio. Both are adequate for spoken weather alerts and news broadcasts. For extended music or talk radio listening, the FRX3+ is generally preferred. For pure emergency use, both are sufficient.
