A weather alert radio is one of those gadgets you hope to forget about. It sits quietly on the nightstand for months, and then one night it does the one job that matters: it wakes you up when a warning is issued for your county. Black Friday is a fine moment to buy one. Just make sure the "deal" is on the radio that actually fits your home.

Short answer: Black Friday 2026 falls on Friday, November 27, and Cyber Monday on November 30. Our shortlist: the Midland WR120B (simple bedside alert radio), the Midland WR400 (alerts plus voice, light and AM/FM), the Midland ER310 (crank and solar radio for the go-bag) and the Sangean CL-100 (strong fit for daily listening). One thing first: if you have no alert radio at all, do not wait for a sale. A warning radio only helps once it is plugged in and programmed.

How to Tell if a Black Friday Weather Radio Deal Is Actually Good

Most offers look the same: a crossed-out price and a big percentage. But a crossed-out "was" price does not automatically tell you whether today's price is unusually low. Here are the checks we use. They take about two minutes.

1. Compare with the radio's own price history

Look up the exact listing in a price tracker such as camelcamelcamel or Keepa and compare today's price with the last three months. A real deal is clearly below what the radio actually sold for recently.

2. Check that it is an alert radio, not just a radio with a weather band

This is the most important check on this page. Many cheap radios list "NOAA weather band" in big letters. That only means you can listen to the weather broadcast. It does not mean the radio switches on by itself and sounds an alarm when a warning is issued.

  • Look for an alert function and, for bedside use, S.A.M.E. (Specific Area Message Encoding): you enter your county code and the radio only sounds for warnings that apply to you. You can find your code on the National Weather Service county list.
  • Crank and solar radios are different tools. The Midland ER310 scans the weather channels and has a weather alert, but no S.A.M.E. county filtering. It is made for outages and go-bags, not as your only night-time warning radio.

3. Add up the batteries and extras

RadioWhat you may still need
Midland WR120BAA batteries for backup during power cuts
Midland WR400AA batteries for backup during power cuts
Midland ER310Nothing to start: it has a built-in rechargeable battery, and 6 AA batteries can serve as a backup (Midland ER310 guide)
Sangean CL-1004 AA batteries for backup; an external strobe or alarm if you want one on its alert output jack

4. Read the return terms before you pay

On Amazon, the holiday return window for 2025 covered most items bought between November 1 and December 31, returnable until January 31, 2026 (Amazon). Check whether the same window applies in 2026, and whether the item is sold by Amazon or a third-party seller.

5. A small discount on the right radio beats a big discount on the wrong one

A 40% discount on a crank radio does not help if what you really need is a radio that wakes you at 3 a.m. for a tornado warning. Decide what you need first, then compare prices.

Don't Let the Discount Choose Your Weather Radio

Answer these questions first. They narrow the choice faster than any percentage.

QuestionWhy it matters
Must it wake you up at night for warnings in your county?Choose a desktop alert radio with S.A.M.E., such as the WR120B, WR400 or CL-100.
Do you lose power for days, or need a radio for evacuation?Choose a crank and solar radio such as the ER310, ideally next to a desktop alert radio.
Is someone in the home hard of hearing? The WR400 adds a voice message and a flashing light; the CL-100 has an output jack for an external strobe or alarm.
Will you listen to the radio every day?The WR400 and CL-100 include AM/FM; the WR120B is an alert radio only.
Do you need to cover more than one county?S.A.M.E. radios can store several county codes; check the manual for the exact number.

Weather Radio Deals by Need

Our Black Friday Weather Radio Shortlist

From simple bedside alerts to the go-bag. Each card links to the full review, where you will find the sources behind every point.

Strong fit for the bedroom

Midland WR120B

Worth checking Black Friday price not checked yet

Why it is on the list: a desktop alert radio that stays quiet until there is a warning for your county, then sounds a loud siren. S.A.M.E. county programming, battery backup and a simple setup make it a strong fit for a bedroom alert radio.

Research basis: our Midland WR120B review, Midland's documentation and owner reports.

Good fit if

  • You want a radio that wakes you for warnings in your county
  • You want something simple to set up
  • You need a second radio for a child's or guest room

Skip it if

  • You want AM/FM radio as well
  • You want the warning read out in words
  • You need a radio for the go-bag

Black Friday check: make sure the listing is the WR120B alert radio and not a bundle you do not need, and keep fresh AA batteries in it for power cuts.

Strong fit for the whole family

Midland WR400

Worth checking Black Friday price not checked yet

Why it is on the list: everything the WR120B does, plus a voice message, a flashing light and AM/FM radio with an alarm clock. It is a good choice when one radio has to serve the whole household.

Research basis: our Midland WR400 review, Midland's documentation and owner reports.

Good fit if

  • Someone at home sleeps deeply or is hard of hearing
  • You want to hear what the warning is about
  • You like a clock radio on the nightstand anyway

Skip it if

  • You only need a simple siren
  • You need a portable radio
  • Space on the nightstand is tight

Black Friday check: compare the price with the WR120B. If you do not need voice, light or AM/FM, the simpler radio does the main job.

Strong fit for the go-bag

Midland ER310

Worth checking Black Friday price not checked yet

Why it is on the list: a radio that keeps going when the power does not. It charges by hand crank, solar panel or USB, takes 6 AA batteries as backup, scans the NOAA weather channels with a weather alert, and adds a bright flashlight with an SOS signal.

Research basis: our Midland ER310 review and the Midland ER310 user guide.

Good fit if

  • You want a radio for the emergency kit or car
  • Your area sees long power outages
  • You like a flashlight and phone charging in one

Skip it if

  • You need county-filtered alerts at night (no S.A.M.E.)
  • You want a small radio for a pocket
  • It would be your only warning radio at home

Black Friday check: the hand crank is for emergencies, not for hours of listening. Midland's guide lists up to 9 minutes of radio per minute of cranking, so charge the battery by USB when you get it.

Strong fit for daily listening

Sangean CL-100

Worth checking Black Friday price not checked yet

Why it is on the list: a Public Alert certified table radio with S.A.M.E. for up to 25 locations, AM/FM with station names on the display, and an output jack for an external strobe or alarm. It suits people who want a good-sounding radio that also guards the house.

Research basis: our Midland WR400 vs Sangean CL-100 comparison, Sangean's specifications and owner reports.

Good fit if

  • You listen to the radio every day
  • You want to connect an external strobe or alarm
  • You need several county codes

Skip it if

  • The loudest possible siren matters most
  • You need a portable radio
  • You only want a simple alert box

Black Friday check: compare it with the WR400. Both do alerts and AM/FM; choose the CL-100 if daily listening and the accessory jack matter most to you.

After You Buy: Five Minutes That Matter

A weather radio in its box protects nobody. Once it arrives:

  • Program your county code (S.A.M.E. radios). Find it on the National Weather Service county list; our guide on how to program SAME codes walks you through it.
  • Put in fresh backup batteries so it keeps working during a power cut.
  • Place it where you will hear it, usually the bedroom.
  • Charge a crank radio fully before it goes into the emergency kit.

Black Friday or Cyber Monday: What to Buy Now and What Can Wait

SituationOur advice
You have no alert radio at homeDo not wait for a sale. Buy a S.A.M.E. alert radio now; a deal later is not worth a missed warning.
You want a second radio or an upgradeWaiting for Black Friday (November 27) or Cyber Monday (November 30) is fine.
It is a giftCheck the seller's holiday return window, and add a note with the recipient's county code.
The price is not below its recent historyWait a few days; prices often move between Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

What to Skip

  • Radios that only list a "weather band" when you need a radio that sounds an alarm by itself.
  • Unknown brands with no manual or support, if you cannot find how to program the county code.
  • "Deals" you can only compare against a list price. If you cannot see what the radio sold for last month, you cannot know if it is a deal.
  • Countdown pressure. Weather radios go on sale several times a year. Missing one offer is never a reason to buy the wrong radio.

Black Friday Weather Radio FAQ

When is Black Friday 2026?

Black Friday 2026 is on Friday, November 27, the day after Thanksgiving (November 26). Cyber Monday is on November 30, 2026.

Do NOAA weather radios go on sale for Black Friday?

Weather radios are often discounted during big sales, but offers differ by seller and year. Check the current price against the radio's recent price history rather than expecting a fixed discount.

Should I wait for Black Friday to buy a weather alert radio?

Only if you already have one. If you have no alert radio at home, buy one now: it only protects you once it is plugged in and programmed for your county.

What is the difference between a weather alert radio and a radio with a weather band?

A radio with a weather band lets you listen to the NOAA broadcast. An alert radio switches on by itself and sounds an alarm when a warning is issued; with S.A.M.E. it does that only for the counties you program.

Is a crank radio enough as my only weather radio?

Usually not for night-time warnings. Crank radios such as the Midland ER310 are made for outages and go-bags; for warnings while you sleep, use a desktop alert radio with S.A.M.E. Many households keep both.

How can I check the price history of a weather radio?

For Amazon listings, use a price tracker such as camelcamelcamel or Keepa: search for the exact product or paste the listing link, and look at the price over the last three months.
