What Dew Point Means

Below that threshold, moisture begins to collect on any surface cooler than the dew point: grass blades, car hoods, windows, and weather instrument housings.

Whether the air temperature is 60°F or 95°F, the dew point stays the same as long as no moisture is added or removed from that air mass.

How Dew Forms

The dew point comfort scale used by the National Weather Service divides conditions into five zones. Same Temperature, Completely Different Feel

Relative humidity can be misleading because it changes as the air warms up. Two days can both be 90°F but feel completely different — and dew point is why. This comparison shows how the same air temperature produces opposite comfort levels depending on the actual moisture in the air.

Both measurements relate to moisture in the air, but they work differently and tell you different things.

A real example: A cool 55°F morning at 90% relative humidity sounds very humid — but the dew point is only about 52°F, perfectly comfortable. Meanwhile, an 88°F afternoon at 60% RH has a dew point near 72°F — genuinely oppressive. Relative humidity told you the wrong story; dew point told you the right one.

High Dew Point and Your Health

Your body cools itself almost entirely through sweat evaporation. When sweat evaporates from your skin, it carries heat with it. High dew points interfere with this process at a physiological level — not because the air is hotter, but because it is already so saturated with moisture that sweat cannot evaporate efficiently.

Dew Point Below 60°F

Sweat evaporates rapidly. Core temperature stays regulated. Physical activity is well-tolerated even in warm air temperatures.

Dew Point 65–70°F

Evaporation slows noticeably. The body must work harder to shed heat. Prolonged outdoor exertion becomes taxing. Hydration matters more.

Dew Point Above 70°F

Evaporative cooling is severely limited. Core temperature can rise even during light activity. Risk of heat exhaustion increases significantly.

Dew Point Above 75°F

Extremely rare in most of the US. The body struggles to cool itself even at rest. Outdoor physical activity carries meaningful risk of heat-related illness.

Why air conditioning helps more than fans in high dew point conditions: Fans accelerate evaporation — but only when sweat can actually evaporate. When dew points exceed 70°F, there is not enough evaporative capacity for a fan to meaningfully cool you. Air conditioning removes moisture from the air, lowering the dew point indoors and restoring evaporative cooling to normal levels.

Dew Point Varies Dramatically by Climate

Where you live determines the dew point range you experience. The same dew point reading means very different things to someone in Phoenix versus someone in Houston.

Desert Southwest

Typical summer DP: 20–45°F

Phoenix, Las Vegas, Tucson. Dew points stay very low most of the year. The “dry heat” is real — 105°F with a 35°F dew point is far more tolerable than 90°F with a 70°F dew point. Monsoon season briefly pushes dew points into the 50–60°F range.

Gulf Coast

Typical summer DP: 65–75°F

Houston, New Orleans, Tampa. Among the highest sustained dew points in the continental US. Dew points above 70°F are common June through September. Heat index values regularly exceed air temperature by 10–15°F during peak humidity.

Great Lakes

Typical summer DP: 50–65°F

Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland. Dew points are moderate in early summer but lake moisture and southerly flow can push readings to 65–70°F during heat waves. The region sees wide daily swings driven by wind direction shifts off the lakes.

Tropical Climates

Why Dew Point Matters Beyond Comfort

Dew point shows up in contexts far beyond outdoor comfort. Understanding it helps you interpret your home weather station data more accurately and make practical decisions.

Fog and frost prediction

When air temperature and dew point converge within 4°F of each other and temperatures are falling overnight, fog is likely by morning. When the dew point is below 32°F and surfaces cool below it, frost deposits instead of liquid dew. Monitoring both numbers on your station gives you advance warning for driving and plant protection.

Indoor condensation and mold risk

In winter, interior window surfaces are often colder than room air. If the dew point of your indoor air is above the window surface temperature, condensation forms on the glass — leading to mold risk and frame damage over time. Keeping indoor dew points below 50°F in winter prevents this in most climates.
