Know the Weather Where You Live, Not Just at the Airport
The temperature and rain in your weather app usually come from an official station at an airport, often several miles from your home. Over that distance a sea breeze, a valley, a city or a single thunderstorm can make a real difference. A home weather station measures the conditions in your own yard, every few seconds, and keeps the history so you can see frost nights, rain totals and wind gusts as they really happened.
Your readings can even help forecasters: through the Citizen Weather Observer Program (CWOP), volunteer stations send their data to the National Weather Service via NOAA's MADIS system, where it is quality-checked and used by forecast models. For storm warnings that work without internet, a NOAA weather alert radio with SAME county codes is the reliable backup.

Three rules for readings you can trust
- Temperature in the shade, 1.25 to 2 m (4 to 6.5 ft) above grass. That is the international (WMO) standard height. Keep the sensor away from walls, paving and roofs, which hold heat and make readings run warm.
- Wind sensor high and in the open. Official stations measure wind at 10 m (33 ft). At home, mount the anemometer as high as you safely can and clear of the roofline and trees; low sensors read calmer than the real wind.
- Rain gauge level and away from obstacles. Trees, fences and walls shelter the gauge and catch less rain. Level it, keep it clear and empty or clean it regularly.
