Fokey is a small weather station brand you mostly meet on Amazon. One of its color stations, the Fokey Z2, does something Fokey says most budget stations skip: the outdoor sensor has its own little screen. Here is what the Z2 measures, what comes in the box, where Fokey's listing and Fokey's own FAQ do not agree, and who should pick something else.

Short answer: the Fokey Z2 is a no-Wi-Fi indoor/outdoor weather station with a 7.6-inch color VA display, an atomic clock (WWVB) with 7 North American time zones, barometric pressure with a trend indicator, and remote sensors that each have a 2-inch screen. It works with up to 3 sensors at up to 328 feet, according to the Amazon listing. It measures temperature, humidity and pressure, not wind or rain. Fokey's own advice is to mount the sensor in a shaded, sheltered spot, like under an eave.

Where Fokey's Listing and Fokey's FAQ Disagree

Fokey publishes a general FAQ PDF for its color weather stations. It describes an older Fokey model (4 time zones, MODE and WEATHER buttons), not the Z2. Put next to the Z2 listing, a few answers do not match. Here is what that means for you:

TopicZ2 listingFokey FAQ (older model)What we would do
Rain on the sensor"Self-draining design" for "all-weather durability"; mount it in a "shaded, sheltered spot (like under an eave)"For that older model: "Is the sensor waterproof? No."The Z2 listing does not say waterproof or not. Follow Fokey's Z2 advice: a sheltered spot under an eave or deck rail, out of direct rain and sun.
RangeUp to 328 feetNot more than 200 feet; each wall counts as about 50 feetPlan for less than the maximum, especially through walls.
Default time zoneEST with daylight saving time onPSTPick your own time zone during setup, whatever the screen shows.
Calibration7 to 10 days for the barometerUsually 3 to 7 daysGive the forecast at least a week and a half before you judge it.

The Sensor With Its Own Screen

Fokey says most weather stations "reduce costs by using non-display sensors". On the Z2, every remote sensor shows its own reading on a 2-inch screen. That is handy when the sensor sits in a greenhouse, garage or shed: you can read it on the spot without walking back to the main display.

Want to watch more places? Fokey sells an extra remote sensor that, according to its listing, works only with the Fokey weather station with ASIN B0H4184DG4, which is the Z2. It runs on 2 AA batteries (not included) and switches between °C and °F.

Pressure, Forecast and the Mold Indicator

The Z2 tracks barometric pressure with hourly updates and a trend graph, and you can switch between absolute pressure (what the sensor measures at your height) and relative pressure (converted to sea level, like the forecast). Our barometric pressure converter explains the difference and converts between inHg and hPa.

The forecast icons need time to learn your location. On the Z2 product page, Fokey says it "takes 7–10 days for the automatic barometer to learn your altitude and ensure accurate forecasts", and that the sensor needs 1 to 2 hours to settle after you move it between indoors and outdoors.

Who the Fokey Z2 Suits

Good fitYou want a big color indoor/outdoor display, readings from two or three rooms or outbuildings, and no app or Wi-Fi to set up.
Look elsewhereYou want wind or rain. Then you need a full station: see the AIRAIN TECH dual display or our weather station quiz.
Also not for youYou want readings on your phone. The Z2 has no Wi-Fi; see our best Wi-Fi weather stations.

Before you buy, know this:

  • Batteries are not included. Extra sensors take 2 AA each.
  • Without a socket nearby, the screen lights for only 8 seconds at a time.
  • Fokey advises a sheltered spot for the sensor (see the table above).
  • The forecast is not reliable in the first week or so.

Setting It Up

Pairing the sensors, setting the time zone before the atomic clock syncs, and fixing a sensor that shows dashes: our Fokey weather station setup and fixes guide walks through it. Comparing similar stations? See Fokey vs Brataste vs AIRAIN TECH or our best indoor outdoor thermometers.

Fokey Weather Station FAQ

Does the Fokey weather station measure wind or rain?

No. The Fokey Z2 measures indoor and outdoor temperature and humidity and barometric pressure, and shows a forecast, moon phase and a mold risk indicator. For wind and rain you need a full weather station.

How many sensors does the Fokey Z2 support?

Up to 3 remote sensors, according to the listing. It is sold with 1, 2 or 3 sensors, and extra Z2 sensors are sold separately.

Is the Fokey Z2 sensor waterproof?

The Z2 listing does not say. It mentions a self-draining design for all-weather use, and Fokey's advice is a shaded, sheltered spot, like under an eave, to block sun and rain. (Fokey's FAQ for an older model says that model's sensor is not waterproof.)

Does the Fokey Z2 have Wi-Fi or an app?

No. It is a standalone station: the readings show on the display and on the sensors' own screens.

Where is the Fokey weather station manual?

The user manual comes in the box. When we checked, no manual PDF was posted on the Amazon listing. Our setup and fixes guide covers the common questions, and Fokey's FAQ gives fokey.us@outlook.com as its support e-mail.
