New Fokey weather station on the table, sensor in your hand, and the outdoor reading shows only dashes? Or the clock jumped to the wrong hour overnight? These are the most common Fokey questions, answered from Fokey's own words: the Q&A on the Fokey Z2 Amazon page, and Fokey's general FAQ PDF, which covers an older Fokey color station. Where the two differ, we tell you which model each answer is for.
Short answer: on the Z2, Fokey's steps for a lost sensor are: put both units on the same channel (1, 2 or 3), keep the sensor within 328 feet and away from thick walls, and hold the CH button to re-sync. (For an older Fokey model, Fokey's FAQ adds a fixed order: display searching first, then batteries in the sensor.) Pick your own time zone before the atomic clock syncs (the Z2 starts on EST with daylight saving time on). Use the power cord for a screen that stays on. And give the forecast 7 to 10 days to calibrate.

First: Which Fokey Do You Have?
| Check | Fokey Z2 | Older model in Fokey's FAQ |
|---|---|---|
| Time zones | 7 (HAT, AKT, PST, MST, CST, EST, AST) | 4 (P, M, C, E) |
| Sensor | Has its own 2-inch screen | Not described |
| Default time zone | EST, daylight saving time on | PST |
| Sensor button | CH | CHANNEL |
Your manual has the exact button names for your model. The Z2 details come from Fokey's Q&A and product description on Amazon.
Fokey Z2: Connecting the Sensor
These are Fokey's own steps for the Z2, from the Q&A on its Amazon page:
- Match channels: "Ensure both units are on CH1, 2, or 3." With more sensors, give each its own channel (the Z2 supports up to 3).
- Clear obstacles: "Keep within 328ft, away from thick walls."
- Re-sync: "Hold the 'CH' button to rebuild the connection instantly."
Fokey adds for the Z2: keep the sensor "3ft away from Wi-Fi routers". The Z2 listing does not give a fixed battery order for pairing; your Z2 manual has the full first-time steps.
Older Fokey Model: Order Matters
For the older model in Fokey's FAQ (4 time zones, CHANNEL button), Fokey is clear: "We must set the base station to 'searching' mode first, and then insert the batteries into the sensor, otherwise the connection cannot be successful."
- Same channel on the sensor and the display, for example both on channel 1.
- Display first: hold the CHANNEL button for 3 seconds to start the search.
- Then the sensor: put the batteries in the sensor while the display is searching.
The same FAQ warns that each wall counts as about 50 feet of range, that the sensor should stay within 200 feet of the display, and that you should not place the sensor or display close to "a metal, TV or computer".
Sensor Shows Dashes or Loses Signal
- Z2: check the channel on both units, check distance and walls, keep the sensor away from Wi-Fi routers, and hold CH to re-sync.
- Older model: re-pair in Fokey's order: display searching first, then fresh batteries in the sensor.
Clock Shows the Wrong Time
The Z2 listing warns: "Please ensure time zone and daylight saving time settings are correct first before enabling the atomic clock function to avoid synchronization errors." According to Fokey's Q&A, the Z2 "defaults to EST with DST ON", so in Central, Mountain or Pacific time the clock will be off until you select your own zone. (On the older model in the FAQ the default was PST, and you press MODE lightly to pick P, M, C or E.)
If the atomic signal (WWVB) is weak at your house, Fokey's advice is to turn off the WWVB function and set the clock by hand. On the older model you hold MODE for 2 seconds and step through DST, year, month, day, 12/24-hour, hour and minutes to the WWVB on/off setting. Wrong day of the week? Fokey's FAQ says to check that the year, month and day are all set correctly.
Screen Will Not Stay On
- On batteries: the Z2 backlight stays on for 8 seconds to save power. Fokey explains that a color display that stays lit on batteries "will be very battery-intensive".
- On the power cord: the Z2 screen can stay on, with three brightness levels.
- "RCC" flashing? On the Z2 that means it is searching for the atomic time signal. Fokey: "Please wait 7-8 mins for it to complete." The older model searches at 1, 2 and 3 a.m. and once an hour when the signal is weak, and its screen can go blank for about 7 minutes during that search.
Readings Differ From the Weather App
That is normal. Fokey's FAQ points out that its station measures the conditions around your house, while the app shows readings for a wider area, often from an airport station. Placement matters too. For the Z2, Fokey says to mount the sensor "vertically in a shaded, sheltered spot (like under an eave) to block sun/rain". The older model's FAQ suggests a north-facing wall, 6 inches below the eaves or under a deck rail (and says that model's sensor is not waterproof; the Z2 listing makes no such statement).
Comparing the display and the sensor side by side? Fokey says small differences are normal because the housings differ (the main unit has more ventilation holes than the sensor), and the units need time to settle. To check a reading, Fokey recommends a mercury or red-spirit (liquid) thermometer rather than another digital one. After moving the Z2 sensor between indoors and outdoors, give it 1 to 2 hours.
Pressure: the Z2 lets you switch between absolute pressure (at your height) and relative pressure (converted to sea level, like the forecast). The older model shows absolute pressure by default; to switch, Fokey says to compare with the relative pressure from your local weather service and adjust the value (hold WEATHER for 2 seconds on that model). Our pressure converter explains the difference.
How Long Calibration Takes
For the Z2, Fokey says it "takes 7–10 days for the automatic barometer to learn your altitude and ensure accurate forecasts". The older FAQ gives 3 to 7 days, and several hours after a move to a different environment. Either way: do not judge the forecast icons in the first week.
Still Stuck?
Fokey's FAQ gives fokey.us@outlook.com as its support e-mail. For the Z2, the listing promises a 365-day replacement for malfunctions not caused by the user. Mention your model (Z2 is on the product page) when you write.
Fokey Setup FAQ
Why does my Fokey weather station show dashes for the outdoor temperature?
The display has lost the sensor signal. On the Z2, Fokey says to check that both units are on the same channel and within 328 feet, keep the sensor away from thick walls and Wi-Fi routers, and hold CH to re-sync. On the older model in Fokey's FAQ, start the search on the display first and then put fresh batteries in the sensor.
Why is my Fokey clock wrong?
The time zone or daylight saving time setting is probably wrong. The Z2 starts on EST with daylight saving time on, so select your own zone before the atomic clock syncs. With a weak signal, turn off WWVB and set the time by hand.
How long does a Fokey weather station take to calibrate?
For the Z2, Fokey says 7 to 10 days for the barometer to learn your altitude, and 1 to 2 hours for the sensor after a move between indoors and outdoors. Fokey's FAQ for an older model gives 3 to 7 days.
Why does my Fokey screen turn off?
On batteries the screen only lights briefly to save power (8 seconds on the Z2). Use the included power cord for a screen that stays on. If "RCC" flashes, the clock is searching for its signal; Fokey says to wait 7 to 8 minutes.
Where should I mount the Fokey Z2 sensor?
Fokey's advice for the Z2: vertically, in a shaded, sheltered spot (like under an eave) to block sun and rain, within 328 feet of the display and 3 feet away from Wi-Fi routers.
