BTMETER BT-100 Handheld Anemometer Review: Specs, Accuracy, Versions

The BTMETER BT-100 is a pocket-size vane anemometer: hold the fan into the wind (or in front of an air vent) and it shows wind speed and air temperature on a backlit screen. BTMETER markets it for HVAC checks, shooting, sailing, drones and kites. We went through BTMETER's instruction manual and the three Amazon listings in the BT-100 family to see what it really measures, where the listing contradicts the manual, and which version to pick.

Where the Listing and the Manual Differ

±5% means a reading of 20 mph could really be anywhere from 19 to 21 mph, by BTMETER's own figure (our arithmetic).

Does the BT-100 Measure CFM?

Not directly, although "CFM Meter" is in its Amazon title. BTMETER answers this in its FAQ on the listing: it "can't directly display CFM airflow volume reading - manual calculation will be required". Step by step, with worked examples: how to measure CFM with an anemometer.

Getting Good Readings (Our Tips)

• Point the fan straight into the wind or airflow; at an angle the vane turns slower.
• Hold it at arm's length, away from your body, which blocks and bends the wind.
• For wind, a tripod on the 1/4-inch thread gives steadier readings than a hand.
• Use AVG (15-second average) on gusty days or at a vent where the number jumps.
• Let the meter sit in the air you are measuring for a while before you read the temperature; a sensor needs time to match its surroundings.

BT-100, BT-100APP or BT-100WM?

The BT-100 on this page is the basic one. The BT-100APP adds a Bluetooth phone app with data logging; the BT-100WM adds humidity, dew point, barometric pressure and altitude. Details per model: BT-100 vs BT-100APP vs BT-100WM.

Who the BT-100 Suits

A good fit if you want indicative readings of wind or air speed, with a margin of ±5% according to BTMETER:

• checking whether air comes out of each HVAC vent, comparing rooms, or seeing the difference before and after a filter change;
• knowing the wind before you fly a drone or kite, or for sailing and shooting practice;
• a second opinion on the wind your weather station reports.

Less suitable if you need:

• a CFM number on the screen: the BT-100 shows air speed only, so you calculate CFM yourself (how);
• a formal airflow or balancing report for an HVAC system: that is a job for a technician with certified instruments;
• readings on your phone (pick the BT-100APP) or humidity and pressure (pick the BT-100WM);
• long-range shooting with built-in ballistics: a meter like the Kestrel 5700 Elite.
