A handheld anemometer, also sold as a wind meter or anemometer wind gauge, tells you how fast the wind or air is moving where you stand. The right one depends on what you measure: wind for a drone or kite, airflow at an HVAC vent, or wind plus weather data for long-range shooting. We compared five handheld meters on what their makers actually publish, from a simple vane meter to a ballistics computer, including what each one does not do.

Short answer: for simple wind checks, the BTMETER BT-100 covers the basics with five units, MAX, MIN and a 15-second average, but it does not calculate CFM. For HVAC work with reports, the AOPUTTRIVER AP-856A calculates CFM, has a probe on a cable for ducts and logs 600 readings to Windows software. If you want CFM on the screen without a probe or PC software, the Proster is the simpler option, though its listing states no accuracy. For humidity, pressure and altitude too, look at the BT-100WM. For long-range shooting, the Kestrel 5700 Elite adds an Applied Ballistics solver.

Ranges and accuracy as published by each maker; they are not measured by us. "Listing" means the maker's Amazon listing; "manual" means the maker's printed manual. None of the makers publishes a water-resistance rating in the sources we read, so keep these meters out of the rain and spray.

BTMETER BT-100: The Simple All-Rounder

A pocket vane meter for wind and air temperature, with five units, MAX, MIN and a 15-second average. It suits a quick check before flying a drone or kite, or a look at whether air comes out of a vent. Its manual gives ±5%; one bullet on its Amazon listing says ±2%, which we explain in our BT-100 review.

Skip it if: you need CFM on the screen (it shows air speed only; you calculate CFM yourself), or you want readings on your phone, in which case the BT-100APP with its Bluetooth app is the variant to choose (BT-100 vs APP vs WM).

BTMETER BT-100WM: Wind Plus Weather

The same wind measurement with humidity, dew point, barometric pressure and altitude added. You can calibrate the pressure to your local reading, and it stores 16 pressure readings, one every 2 hours.

Skip it if: you need ballistics (it has none), a phone app (none mentioned), or exact altitude: the manual warns that altitude is calculated from pressure and shifts with the weather. BTMETER gives no humidity range or accuracy, and the manual notes it does not switch itself off on the barometer screen, so check it is off after use.

Proster: CFM on the Screen, Kept Simple

Like the BT-100 it measures air speed in five units, but it also shows airflow volume in CFM, CMM or CMS once you enter the area of the opening. Compared with the AP-856A it is simpler: no probe on a cable and no PC software. It has hold, maximum and minimum readings, a backlit screen and runs on a 9V battery (included). Older background: our Proster write-up.

Skip it if: you need a documented accuracy (the listing states none), stored readings or reports (the listing mentions no logging), or a probe to reach inside a duct. The listing title also gives no model number, so check you are on the "Proster Digital Anemometer Handheld Wind Speed Meter CFM" page.

AOPUTTRIVER AP-856A: For HVAC Airflow With Records

The meter here built most clearly for ducts and vents. You enter the duct cross-section (0.001 to 9999, per the listing) and it shows CFM or CMM directly. The vane sits on a detachable probe with a flexible cable, so you can reach into a duct. It stores 600 records and exports them over USB to PC software for reports, and it has MAX, MIN and AVG. AOPUTTRIVER lists ±3% + 0.2 accuracy, a range up to 45 m/s and a 2-year warranty. Background: our AP-856A review.

Skip it if: you only check wind outdoors now and then (the probe and software add little), or you use a Mac or a laptop without a disc drive: the listing says the software comes on a CD for Windows 98, XP, 7 and 10, and mentions no Mac version.

Kestrel 5700 Elite: For Long-Range Shooting

Much more than a wind meter: Kestrel combines wind, temperature, humidity and pressure with an Applied Ballistics solver, a compass for crosswind and headwind, and stored gun and target profiles. Kestrel's support FAQ says the wind display is a 3-second rolling average, that holding the meter 5° off-axis reduces accuracy by 1%, that the impeller should be replaced every 2 to 3 years depending on use (customers can fit factory-calibrated replacements), and that the 5 Series has a five-year warranty. It runs on one AA lithium battery. Background: our Kestrel 5700 Elite page.

Which Kestrel to pick: the Amazon button opens a search, so check the model. According to Kestrel's FAQ, the Elite stores 30 guns against 3 on the standard 5700, reaches 5,500 yards against 4,000, and adds multi-target stages and a faster processor; a 5700 can be upgraded to the Elite through the Kestrel LiNK Ballistics app. Choose a LiNK model if you want to use your phone: Kestrel says a non-LiNK unit cannot connect to a mobile device.

Skip it if: you do not shoot long range. For simple wind checks, a basic meter does the job.

How to Choose a Handheld Anemometer

  • Do you need CFM on the screen? The AP-856A and Proster calculate it once you enter the area; with the BT-100 you calculate it yourself (how).
  • Do you need a record? The AP-856A stores 600 readings and exports them to Windows software; the BT-100APP logs to a phone app.
  • Do you need weather data too? The BT-100WM adds humidity, pressure and altitude; the Kestrel adds those plus ballistics.
  • Do you need a documented accuracy? Check that the maker states one: the Proster's listing does not.
  • Very low airflow? Small vane meters need some air to turn; the BT-100's manual range starts at 0.5 m/s. HVAC technicians often use hot-wire anemometers for very low air speeds; our anemometer guide explains the types. None of the five meters here is a hot-wire model.

Whatever you choose, how you hold it matters as much as the meter: see how to measure wind speed. For a permanent wind sensor at home, a weather station with an anemometer on a mast is the better tool.

Handheld Anemometer FAQ

What is the best handheld anemometer for HVAC?

For HVAC airflow, a meter that calculates CFM and reaches into ducts helps most. Of the five here, the AOPUTTRIVER AP-856A shows CFM directly once you enter the duct area, has a probe on a cable and logs 600 readings to Windows software.

Do handheld anemometers measure CFM?

Some do, after you enter the area of the opening: the AP-856A and the Proster both offer a CFM function. The BTMETER BT-100 only measures air speed, so you calculate CFM yourself.

How accurate are handheld anemometers?

Makers state figures such as ±5% (BTMETER BT-100 manual) or ±3% + 0.2 (AOPUTTRIVER AP-856A listing); some listings state none. How you hold the meter matters too: Kestrel says holding its meter 5° off-axis costs 1% accuracy.

Which Kestrel should I buy for shooting?

The 5700 Elite stores more gun profiles and targets and reaches further than the standard 5700, according to Kestrel's FAQ, and a 5700 can be upgraded through the Kestrel LiNK app. Pick a LiNK model if you want to connect your phone.
